There's no better way to start a new blog in a new year than with a prediction. I realise that the dust has barely settled on the most recent pageant, but I am certain that the wheels are already turning and the search (read Sonia Raciti's pick) for the next Miss South Africa is well under way.
Given that the 2010 World Cup is a little over a year and a half away, and that the next Miss SA will play an integral part in the festivities, it makes sense that the next winner will be of African heritage. I just don't see a lily white Boere meisie running around pretending to represent the continent.
Having said this, who would fit the role like a glove? My bet is Raelene Rorke. Whilst not as physically attractive as some of the African contestants in recent years, she is well-spoken and can string three words together to make a coherent sentence (unlike my favourite Black contestant in 2008). She is also a seasoned member of the Sun International family.
Rumour has it that she was disappointed at not winning in 2007, and that she would never enter again, but that remains to be seen. She appears to have embarked on a carefully choreographed social responsibility program and is currently involved in every charity under the sun. Very impressive for her Miss SA application!
