The Miss SA Campus pageant began in the mid-70's and the Rag Queens from the 10 traditionally "white" campuses competed. In the mid-80's the pageant name was changed to National Rag Personality since the organisers wanted to move away from the beauty queen tag that the title implied.
In the mid-90's the pageant name changed once again and became the Miss Tertiary SA pageant. The pageant was open to the Rag Queens of all tertiary institutions (black and white, universities and technikons) in South Africa.
In 2003, the pageant became the Miss SA Campus pageant once again, and was organised by a model agency in Pretoria that had no affiliation with any of the institutions.
