"The Miss SA Teen 2010 pageant will be held on Saturday, 25 September 2010 at the Valley of Waves in Sun City. The pageant is one of the highlights of the annual Springbreak festival at Sun City and is, as always, a spectacular event."
I have no idea who writes the copy for the Miss SA Teen website, but whoever it is definitely needs a refresher course at Journo School. For a start, this particular "highlight" is only in it's second year as part of the annual Springbreak Festival. Prior to 2009 it was held in the comfort of an air-conditioned theatre.
Secondly, spectacular is gorgeous young women sashaying down a runway in fabulous gowns whilst being serenaded by an award-winning performer. Spectacular is stunning sets, fantastic lights and a sophisticated audience dressed to the 9's in designer clothing. Spectacular is an audio-visual delight that wows spectators.
What spectacular is not is having a group of teen girls trudging a make-shift platform in crappy mall frocks to the hideous strains of Kwaito-hip-hip-techno-pop whilst being ogled by a mob of rowdy, belching, farting, drunken students that show their appreciation with wolf-whistles and lewd comments whilst cupping their lunch boxes in a suggestive manner.
Needless to say that Mama Pompeii will more than likely be sitting there grinning from ear to ear believing that she has done a good job and is part of history. Has anyone told her that Machiavelli, Hitler and Verwoerd were also part of history?
Ok! I've taken a pill and calmed down now. May the best girl win and may she have a fabulous year, yadda-yadda, blah-blah.
